What is a BSB Number?

The 642-170 BSB number is a six-digit numeric code used to identify "Australian Military Bank Ltd" as a individual financial institution branch. This BSB code is used in addition to the bank account number to identify the recipient of a transfer. BSB is an abbreviation for: Bank State Branch. BSB Numbers are used in Australian Paper Clearing System (APCS) and Bulk Electronic Clearing System (BECS) payment systems.

The bank BSB number format consists of three parts: AAB-CCC.
  • AA - first two digits - specify the bank or financial institution where the money is being sent.
  • B - third digit indicated which state the bank branch is located in.
  • CCC - last three digits are a unique identifier for a branch, usually specifying the address of the bank branch.

To issue a money transfer, the BSB Number is used together with the bank account number of the recipient. For international money transfers, a SWIFT code is used together with a BSB Number and Account Number.

In APCS payment system (paper transactions - cheques), BSB and account numbers, are are printed at the bottom of the cheque in MICR form, and are used to identify the specific bank account number to be debited.

How do I find my BSB Number?

If you need to transfer money to a bank in Australia, BSB numbers can generally be found on the bank’s website, often included together with a bank branch locator tool. If you’re unsure of the bank’s BSB, call the branch before you attempt to make a transfer, to ensure you’ve got the correct code.

International Bank Account Number (IBAN)

Europe, Middle East and Caribbean countries have adopted the use of International Bank Account Number (IBAN) for international funds transfers. Remember to use IBAN if you are doing fund transfer to countries in these regions.

An IBAN account number format consists of up to 34 alphanumeric characters so it would be wise to validate the IBAN number prior making international fund transfer.

IBANs don’t replace sort codes or account numbers. They are used to identify individual bank accounts for both incoming and outgoing international money transfer transactions whereas SWIFT code / BIC codes are mainly used to identify a specific bank during an international transaction.
